Study of an Artist in the Making

Here's the third, and final, assignment from the first section of the book. A self-portrait. I can see bits I dislike but overall I don't think it came out too bad. It's been a while since I sat down and looked in a mirror for a forty five minutes and drawn myself.

Amazing.

The drawing, too.

There's a kind of world-weariness in your expression here that cuts through the simple drawing of eyes, hair, nose, etc. IMHO, the best portraits are ones that convey something more about the subject than what they look like (for example, the impatient, tapping fingers of Pope Innocent X in Velasquez's portrait). I'd hate to think of what a good portrait of me would bring to the surface.

Christy: Thanks, I thought this had a very good likeness. It would be interesting to compare this to the larger piece I did back in high school.

Sideon: Cad! *Blush* Thanks.

Randy: I've noticed that's the case with life-drawing. You can just "tell" when something is drawn from life over something from photographic reference. It adds something else to the drawing.

Wry: Thanks, that's sweet of you to say!
